2012 Boxing Day Trial 26th December

65 hardy souls ascended the steep tarmac road to Back Cowm Quarry , Whitworth , in order to work off a handful of mince pies in the annual Boxing Day Trial. All the usual classes were represented ~ with the added spice of a dozen or so Enduro lads riding their actual Enduro machines !  We were also honoured with the presence of ex ~ World Championship front runner Yrjo Vesterinen , riding a rather special sounding Bultaco !

The day started fine ,dry and mild ~ but as so often happens in Back Cowm,  things deteriorated as the Trial progressed . With the wide range of machines and abilities in attendance ,  the 8 sections were understandably laid out sensibly , with a couple of straightforward rocky numbers getting the 3 lap event  underway.

The first major mark stealer was the Christmas Cracker at the 3rd , where observer Bill Francis Claus  delivered gifts wholesale across all classes , the series of turns over Cowm rockery proving deceptively slippery ! Just a handful of riders received the gift of a clean sheet here, not surprisingly most of them respective class winners including Josh Woods ( Expert ) ,Mark Southwick ( Novice) , Knocker Noakley (Pre 65 ) , Hanna Vesterinen (Beginner) , and Sam Blackburn (Youth Beginner).  Consistent with this trend , the only clean on the tough Green route here was recorded by Intermediate Martin Sandiford on his opening lap .

The 4th section led riders up the twists ,turns and boulders of the ‘River Cowm’. Despite being laid out with  festive consideration and extracting few marks from the majority , ‘Vesty’ parted with a very generous 8 marks here, including his only maximum of the day.

There is absolutely no truth in the rumour that Vesty was getting into the spirit of Chrimbo by scatting marks negligently,  in order to give many starstruck younger riders present the gift of his scalp !

With the usual protagonists riding out of class , it was left to St Helens visitor Josh Woods to clean up the Expert award, by 6 marks from the consistent Julian Ingham. However , probably the ride of the day was posted by Mark Southwick on his Montesa , who cleaned up , quite literally , on the middle route to take the Novice win. An excellent ,consistent ride .

So an enjoyable event brought the Clubs long list of events for 2012 to a close . Thanks are due to all organisers and observers , and on behalf of the committee of the R&DMC , have a very Happy and Healthy (Feet Up ) New Year !
