Back cowm quarry was the venue for the first trial of the year for the Rochdale club, with 80 riders it was a good turn out, with riders once again traveling considerable distances to ride. Section one observed by Neil Anderton was a tricky one for the hard route boys with only Andy Cripps and Jack Price Brad and Dec Bullock cleaning on the first lap Julian Ingham had a five here as did Richard Anderton. It was the youngsters who lead the way on the day with all three youth expert riders taking first second and third overall, Jack Price was in a league of his own dropping only 10 in total then it was the Bullock brothers with Brad on 20 and Dec on 22. In the adult class Andy Cripps got the win losing 27 in total a long way in front of second place man Julian Ingham who finished on a grand total of 66 marks lost third went to Paul Heyes on 76. In the inters Russell Carter is proving to be a hard man to beat and went around for a loss of just 22 marks second place was David Cocker 35, one ride to mention was Curtis Fitzsimmons who rode in the A class he dropped 31 in total this gave him second overall on the green route course with only Carter besting him. In the novice class Adam Mcanna was top dog on 30 with Ben Wright in second place on 43 in total, Ben had Machine problems early on he was helped out by Dave Ketteringham and was soon back on track, Joe Hiley was top B class rider losing 89 in total followed in by Alex Yiatrou on 116 in total. The over 40 class went to Marl Grimshaw on his Montesa losing 24 second was Danny Ralph’s who dropped down from the inters finishing on 26, the over 50 class went to Mike Leddy and the youth beginners was won by local lad Sam Blackburn. Unfortunately section 4 had to dropped from the results as the observers sheet blow away in the high winds and no matter how we searched it was never to be seen again.

Thanks to all helpers and organizers

Results rochdalemc201111

The Rochdale crew had decided to make possibly the last trial run at Shawforth quarry one to remember so with assistance from some of the older members of the committee who can still remember the old sections from the national days of the Red Rose Trial, it was decided that a large lap consisting of 12 sections was going to be the order of the day. So the course was laid out and the route marked out on Saturday on a lovely clear day, as so often happens to best laid plans the Sunday the day of the event turned out to be Foggy to say the least, pea soup jumps to mind as a description of the conditions. So extra route markers where needed and put in place, so field of109 riders would actually have some small chance of finding the sections and also finding their way back to the start area. The size of the lap and bad visibility on the day slowing forward motion down considerably and the fact that the observers where showing signs of hyperthermia the course was closed at around15:15. When the observer boards where counted it appeared that only 48 riders had ridden every section three times. So the decision had to be made for a result and the only way we could find was to drop the trial to two laps so we could get an accurate result. I can only apologize to the riders who managed to finish the three laps but at least you got a good ride out. So onto the results on the hard route there were three riders who finished on 15 in total this being Josh Law, Julian Ingham and Billy Bolt, Josh got the decision with 16 cleans compared to 15 from Julian and Billy Bolt. Billy was unlucky in that he had five on the relatively easy section 12that cost him the overall win but he still got the best youth expert award so it was still worth the drive down from the north east. In the largest class entry of the year top intermediate was Russell Carter on 18 pushed on by Scottish vintage star Paul Heyes who dropped 21, Russell managed to clean both of the sections at Cuckoo rocks, these sections where found and set by Over 50 star Andy Wright who last rode them in 1989 when the club used them on the Red Rose and what a couple of crackers they turned out to be, proving to be just as much as a challenge 22 years later to the modern machine and rider. In the novice class Danny Sharples got the win losing 22 second went to young Jack Butterworth on 25, on this route section 7 turned into a real mark stealer the dreaded river section it was bone dry this year and proved to have less traction than when there is water present. There were only a handful of cleans here with Chris Lord cleaning on every visit the only rider to do this on his way to the over 40 class win losing a measly 6 marks in fact this was the best score on the middle route only Andy Wright nearly matched him losing 7 in total and winning the over 50 class to boot. In the youth A Class local lad Curtis Fitzsimmons got the win losing 38 in total and second went to Jamie Proctor who dropped 54, in the youth C Class Joe Hiley was top dog losing 55 and was well on the way to finishing the full three laps not bad for an 11 year old when disaster struck at cuckoo rocks and his chain snapped believe me you would not want to push it back from there. Luckily for Joe is dad is a bit of spanner man and managed to get the chain back together but the delay was too much for a full three lap finish. Second place went to Alex Yiatrou who went around for a loss of 86 in total. I would like to thank all the organizers and especially the observers some who were called out retirement to man the far out points of the course and I can only wish for sunshine if we ever get to use this land again when they have finished building roads all over the moors for the environmental friendly windmills….

The last round of this years championship was held once again at back cowm quarry in Whitworth, with all the class leaders fighting for championship points there where some close fought battles on the night with the experts and over 40 classes both having riders finishing on the same scores and having to be separated once again by most cleans and furthest clean rulings. In the expert class Andy Cripps and Josh Law both rode the course for a total loss of 12 but once again Crippsy got he decision on the night, Andy has had a very steady season so far this year and his keeping his younger rivals at bay albeit only just in Mr. Law’s case. In the youth expert Class 13 year old Curtis Fitzsimons got one over on Richard Anderton by a 2 mark margin Curt dropped 65 To Andertons 67 total and had real a disaster on section 4 with a maximum recorded on every visit. The intermediate class had a new lease life in the form of Jack Wilkinson who rode like he was in the Scott time and ob and finished about an hour after he started, but none the less he showed them all how to do it and finished on 23 in total cleaning section 5 the river section on his way. In the novice class Jack Butterworth had the biggest winning margin of the night he only lost 4 in total with second place man Jon Decamps trailing in on a total of 17, section 5 did most of the damage here for Decamps. Youth B and youth C only had one entry each with Connor Hogan in the B class and Alex Yiatrou in the C class. In the very competitive over 40’s class once again Martin Jackson had the upper hand losing 3 in total but Lance Ingham riding his Yamaha pinkie kept him honest also losing 3 in total the furthest clean rule had to be used to sort these two out relegated to third was Martins riding partner Stephen Robinson who dropped 7 in total. The over 50’s class was once again won by Andy Wright but by his standards he had a bit of a bad ride as he lost 10 marks in total second went to Mr. Cripps who lost a whopping 30 marks in total. Cowm leisure boss man John Whittle rode or dragged his Honda TLM 50 around as the only twin shock entrant for a loss of 55 marks. The beginners where well represented particularly in the youth class with Chad Isherwood losing 2 in total on his big wheel Gas Gas and second place went to Eight year old Max Johnson who rode his small wheel Beta 50 around for a loss of 7 in total. The conducted class once again under the careful instruction of Julian Ingham was won by Lillie Yiatrou who dropped 14 in total second placed was Harry Heywood on 20 in total, thanks to all see you next year.

With many local farms and rural Dwellings in the Rossendale area the availability of a 4×4 vehicle will aid in accessing these areas so a second hand Toyota Rav 4 was found by the Whitworth Enduro club and a cheque for £1500 from Rochdale D.M.C and Cowm leisure was also presented to go towards the running costs of the vehicle.

The cheque was presented at the Rochdale clubs 2nd evening trial with representatives from all concerned pictured.

The First round of the 2011 Joan Robinson evening series took place at the usual venue of Back cowm quarry, with the current heat wave a warm summers night welcomed the 66 riders. The course turned out to be a bit on the easier side than normal but still provided enough of a challenge to give us a clear winner in each class apart from the intermediates who had to be split on the most cleans ruling. So straight to the expert class and Andy Cripps who got the win and recorded his first ever clean ride in a trial, I thought he would have achieved this earlier in his career as he seems to have been riding trials for ever and he is still only in his thirty’s. Josh Law was relegated to the runner up spot on this occasion ending his winning streak at the Rochdale club he lost 3 in total a 2 on section 4 and a dab on section 8. But second place overall went to the only youth expert rider Jack Price who finished on a very creditable total of 2. In the inter’s it was a close fought battle between Steven Rowles and Jimmy Bentley both finished on 9 in total but Rowlesy got the verdict on Most Cleans in the Novice class Danny Sharples got the win finishing on 12 with Ross Hall second on 17. Once again the biggest class of the night was the over 40 brigade with Steven Robinson just edging out Nigel Pickering in the new over 50 class Andy Wright just had a single dab followed by Les Patinson who dropped 15 in total. With no youth A class riders present it was left to youth B class riders on the middle route section’s to make a name for them selves Jordan Kent got the win on his Gas Gas losing a total of 8 and second went to Harry Jackson who lost 28 in total, in the youth C class Alex Yiatrou went around for a loss of 40 marks dropped. Peter Andrews riding in the adult beginner class got the win losing 6 and in the youth beginners Harvey Doolan rode his Beta around for a loss of 18 and the win. And last but not least the conducted class Ellie Ingham came out on top losing 17 and second place went to Greg Weston who dropped 25 in total third placed was Lillie Yiatrou who dropped 44.

Lee Quarry was the venue for the 2011 Sid Humphries trial, after a sunny Saturday the day of the trial was a cold and overcast day with rain at the start of the day. This made the sections quite challenging and once again some high scores where recorded at the end of the day. Section one was the mark stealer for the hard route boys with nobody cleaning here at all the best effort was from trial winner Josh Law who managed a single dab ride on his second lap on the middle route section three proved to be the most challenging the best ride here on the middle route course went to Lee Walker who just dropped a dab on his third lap under the watchful eye of Anthony Bower. Section six is becoming a but of an old favorite at Lee quarry now with the narrow gulley to reach the end cards causing quite a stir and a clean here got you a cheer from your fellow riders not that there where many cleans on the day, over 40 victor Stephen Robinson had the best score with a three, 2 cleans and a dab. Curtis Fitzsimmons now on his 125cc machine took a convincing win in the A class dropping 48 in total the only other rider to better this score on the green route was intermediate winner Jimmy Bentley who lost 38 in total. Jack Butterworth got the novice win losing 48 in total and the over 50’s class went to Stephen Collinson who dropped 79 in total in the youth section once again Alex Yiatrou was the only entrant in the C class age group and finished on a total score of 134.

The first trial of the year for the Rochdale club took place at Back Cowm Quarry Whitworth this was a charity event as the Boxing day trial was cancelled, the money raised will be donated to the Rossendale first responders who are looking to buy a 4 x 4 so they can reach the more remote locations of the Rossendale valley. With a entry of 83 riders and ten observers all in place the trial got under way, the sections turned out to be very slippy on the day and there where large scores recorded by the majority of the field. Having said this there where only ten retirements one of these was expert rider Julian Ingham who suffered a knee injury on section seven and had to be lifted out on the section by his fellow riders. In the Expert class it was Josh Law once again who took the win he lost 10 in total, but was one of the last riders to finish the trial as he stopped and helped Julian Ingham back to the start area, second place was Jack Spencer who was favourite to take the win as his national results have been so good of late he lost 12 in total. In the youth expert class Jack Price had another very impressive ride and lost a total of 34 this put him in third place overall, a young man to watch in the future, second place went to Richard Anderton who lost 126 in total. In the Intermediate class Jimmy Bentley made a rare appearance and gave the rest of the inters a lesson in trials riding he rode the green route for a loss of 33, second place went to Ross Law who doubled Bentleys score losing 73 in total. In the youth A class Tom Minta got the win on 60 in total second place went to Danielle Whitham who dropped 72, youth B class went to Jamie Proctor and the youth C winner was Joe Hiley who lost 85 in total, his younger brother Henry was the best in the conducted class he lost 24 in total followed in by Max Johnson who dropped 54 in total. Ben Wright opted to ride in the Novice class and got the win on 65 marks just beating Mathew Hopkinson by one mark, in the over 40 classes Stephen Robinson was very steady dropping 33 and second place went to Scardon Coupe on 40 in total. A new class has been created for 2011 for over 50 year olds and the top over 50 rider was Stephen Collinson on 96 and second place was John Lawrence on 133. Last but not least the beginner classes in the adults David Allcock had a convincing win on a total loss of 28 marks, second went to Peter Andrews who helped set out the trial he lost 43 in total, in the youth beginners Jacob Snowdon was top boy on 18 and second was Gabby Whitham on 45 in total.

Dear members

Your committee are pleased to report another successful year for our club and are optimistically looking forward to 2011 with anticipation and enthusiasm for several reasons:-

On the 2nd October R & DMC and Cowm Leisure will be hosting the Red Rose Solo British Championship Round at Back Cowm Quarry; this will be a fantastic event not just from the point of view of raising the image of our club but also for the sport in general; many spectators will attend who would not normally participate in our sport, this will generate interest and promote a better understanding of Trials and will no doubt be well covered by the local press.

Due to the success of this years practice days Chris Law is organising at least one training day (date to be confirmed) which the club will be contributing towards the costs involved, there will be a top class British Championship rider to give help and assistance, please keep an eye on our website for further updates.

A very well received Conducted class was added in both our Joan Robinson Evening Trials and the Novice Beginners Championship series; this was attributed to the kind offer of help from Neil Anderton whom we are pleased to welcome as a new committee member; we are also very grateful to and would like to thank Ian and Shane from the Cock & Magpie for their hospitality & generosity in providing a free supper to all who attended their pub after each Evening Trial.

We also offer a warm welcome to Peter Andrews & Andy Wright; both have volunteered to help within the club and have joined our committee as from our AGM in November.

Please note:- in an attempt to accommodate varying levels of ability, the 2011 Trials are planned as follows

Conducted classes will be included in the Evening Trials and the Novice Beginner Series

The Novice Beginner series will be tailored to a slightly easier standard than normal club Trials

The Joan Robinson Evening series & other club Trials will be at an average level

The Julian Bentley & The Pennine which are our North West Center rounds will be more challenging!

A new award is on the horizon, “The Ann Isherwood Observers Championship Trophy”, as you will know Ann was a regular volunteer for observing not just at our club but at every Trial she attended; this will be awarded to the person who observes the most often at our club Trials throughout the season.

Please hand back any trophies to committee members as soon as possible so that they can be engraved in preparation for the next recipients.

Our now “renowned” Annual Presentation Dinner is booked for the 5th March 2011 at the Riverside, Whitworth, this event is always a complete sell out so please be sure to order your tickets in advance for what is guaranteed to be a seriously good night out (five course meal & live entertainment)

We have encountered no reported incidents this year of members riding illegally at our venues

The general conduct of riders at our events has been excellent! We would like to thank everyone for their personal contribution which has helped maintain standards for the good of the club and its members.

Committee meetings are held at the Healey Hotel, Shawclough Road on the second Wednesday of each month at 8:30pm, if you would like to offer help in some way please come along

May we take this opportunity to wish you a very

Happy New Year !

The Pennine trial was held once again high above Whitworth at Middlehill Quarry and taking in the area of Rough hill with 107 riders this was the best entry of the year for the Rochdale club. With the number of riders all the different classes where bulging and some close scores where recorded down the ranks. The overall win went to Josh Law who had the ride of life to take some very respectable scalps in the expert class, Josh said he opted to ride trial on his own and not in a group of riders, this must have worked for him as a total score of 5 was very respectable.

Second overall was Grant Morris who has been having a sabbatical from the trials scene and as taken up golf, this must help with the trials as this was also one of Grants better results, third place went to Andy Cripps who dropped 14 in total.

In the youth experts Richard Anderton was the only entry but unfortunately he was forced to retire as his rear tyre came off the rim at the bottom of section 4 Cranberry Gully which just happens to be the furthest point on the course from the start area. In the Intermediates Local lad Jordan Bower had a convincing win he rode his 300 Gasser around for the loss of 21 in total he lost 3 of these on section 3 Bowersies beck named after his Father as he normally observes here, second was Phil Scott on 26 and third was Andy Judson on 34.

Julian Ingham Expert Rider

The youth A class went to Curtis Fitzsimmons who lost 34 in total his worst section was Cranberry the best he could manage here was a 2, second was Thomas Minta who traveled from Shropshire to ride he lost 49 in total. In the youth B class Ben Wright was top dog with a total score of 74 Ben’s worst section was section 6 the hill climb he had 3 maximums here and a 2 for good measure this section divided the field as some riders nailed it everytime whilst others just did not seem to get any drive from the run up and failures followed most notably by visiting southern rider Chris Lord who fived on every visit. The youth C class was rode by Alex Yiatrou who battled around the moorland course for a loss of 168 in total. In the Novice class Geoff Potts took the class win losing 50 in total second went to Lee Seddon on 58 and third place was Tom Smith on 59. The biggest class on the day was once again the over 40 class and Andy Wright was untouchable on the day he only lost 9 in total, the usual suspects took to runner up positions with Pete Clibburn on 24 and Andy Fitzsimmons on 30, the twin shock class was a family affair between father and son with Lance Ingham showing his lad Oliver how to ride an old Fantic Lance dropped 40 and Ollie finished on 70.
